Why should you receive a facial

You already know that facials are great for a wide range of skin concerns. In fact, they’re really a family of spa services that utilize different products and techniques to achieve healthy-looking skin. These highly customizable treatments can even include hair removal methods, such as dermal leveling.

Here are a few of the top benefits of these services to look forward to.

Facials are cleansing

Facial skin is prone to clogged pores due to makeup, dead skin, and naturally occurring oils. Even if you wash your face as part of your daily skincare routine, it can be hard to get a deep cleanse.

Most facial treatments address this by starting with a thorough cleansing. After washing your face and using specially formulated products to remove any impurities, your skincare expert can go a step further to clear blackheads and other buildup or blemishes through extractions.

Relaxation is guaranteed

Treatments are typically painless and may include a relaxing facial massage, lymphatic drainage, or other methods to pamper your face, neck, and décolletage. You’ll leave your appointment feeling rejuvenated and ready to take on the world!

Facials are anti-aging

Many facials are meticulously formulated to fight the signs of aging. By gently exfoliating away dead skin cells and utilizing collagen-stimulating products like hyaluronic acid, your esthetician will rejuvenate your skin and reveal a healthy, youthful glow.

With regular appointments, you can watch as fine lines and dark spots disappear. You’ll have a fresh complexion before you know it!

What to do after receiving a facial

Proper aftercare is essential to making the most of your facial treatment. In the days following your appointment, you might notice dry, flaky skin and minor redness. This is totally normal! As soon as these symptoms subside, you’ll start to see the radiant skin beneath.

Here is our expert advice for post-facial care.

Drink a lot of water

Adequate hydration comes from the inside out. If you aren’t drinking plenty of water, your skin will suffer the consequences. As your delicate skin recovers from any facial treatment, it will need even more moisture than usual. So, drink up!

Take a break from makeup

You might want to hide any lingering redness with a layer of your favorite foundation, but your best bet is to let your skin breathe for a day or two following treatment. Makeup and the brushes and sponges used to apply it can harbor bacteria. However, even brand-new products can clog your open pores.

Keep makeup and other non-essential products away from your face for a minimum of eight hours or overnight if possible.

Baby your sensitive skin

It can be tempting to pick at flaky skin when you notice dry patches on your face. However, your outer layer will be particularly sensitive after your facial, so treat it with extra care. That means you should avoid touching your face and steer clear of physical or chemical exfoliators for at least 48 hours.

Instead, use a gentle facial cleanser, toner, and hydrating moisturizer to quench your thirsty skin. Stick with any products your esthetician recommends. After all, that cheap drugstore body wash wasn’t meant for your face, especially in the days after your spa treatment.

Use clean towels and pillowcases

Facials can leave you with open pores that are more susceptible to bacteria and other irritating factors. Using fresh towels to pat your face dry after your (lukewarm!) showers, as well as clean pillowcases, can help you avoid breakouts and other complications.

Try your best to avoid excessive sunlight

Your tender skin will be more sensitive to UV rays in the days following your facial treatment.

Avoid direct sunlight at all costs and slather on a high-SPF sunscreen every two hours. Even minor exposure like ambient light can damage your skin’s moisture barrier, so sun protection is essential whether you’re inside or outside.

Don’t do anything that would make you sweat

Sweat can also introduce bacteria into your open pores and cause breakouts. It’s best to avoid intense exercise and other sweat-inducing activities for at least 48 hours. That means no trips to the steam room, either. If you need to stretch your legs, consider a walk–with a wide-brimmed hat, or a gentle yoga session instead.

Hold off on water-based activities

Whether you prefer a glistening turquoise swimming pool, the salty ocean, or a crisp mountain stream, you’ll need to stay out of the water for a couple of days after your facial treatment. Taking a dip can expose you to harmful bacteria and irritating chemicals that you’ll want to avoid for the best results.
