Everything to Know About Microneedling Aftercare

Microneedling is a popular skincare treatment that boosts collagen production by up to 400% and increases blood flow to the face or other treatment areas. This can help minimize wrinkles, large pores, pigmentation and acne scarring.

No matter why you choose microneedling, proper aftercare is essential to achieve the best results, and avoid a lengthened recovery period.

Here's what you can expect if you’ve never had a microneedling session. The first step is to remove any makeup or oils that might be in your pores. After a thorough face cleansing, your esthetician will apply numbing cream to the treatment area and use a microneedling device to create tiny microchannels in your skin. These devices typically have stainless steel or titanium disposable needles measuring 0.5mm to 2.5mm. Practitioners often start by gliding in one direction, then gliding in a perpendicular path to cover your entire face, with the exception of your eyes.

This process stimulates a healing response in your body, and also allows the follow-up skincare products to be absorbed at a deeper level than normal.

What can you expect after a microneedling appointment?

Even minimally invasive procedures can affect your skin. Let’s go over some of the most common, potential side-effects following microneedling sessions.

Expect a flushed complexion after microneedling

Because the microneedling process creates tiny microchannels  in the skin, you can expect some redness. In fact, almost everyone has some degree of inflammation. This may feel like a sunburn and appear as flushing or tiny red dots. In any case, discoloration should fade within a day following your treatment. Pigmentation may appear darker before fading.

You can also count on your skin to dry out more than usual. You might have flaking and tightness as well.

There is a low, unlikely chance of swelling

Irritation can also manifest in slight swelling around the treatment area. If it’s particularly uncomfortable, try sleeping on your back to reduce friction overnight. After two or three days, swelling, redness, and tenderness should begin to subside.

Tips to follow for microneedling aftercare

It’s common for skin to become dry and slightly red in the days following your microneedling treatment. You’ll want to take extra precautions, like wiping down your phone with isopropyl alcohol, and avoid touching your face to ensure you don’t introduce bacteria to your delicate pores.

Here are our best tips for optimal healing.

Protect yourself from the sun

Avoiding sun exposure is crucial for recovery. In fact, many professionals recommend steering clear of direct sunlight for up to two weeks after microneedling. If that’s not possible, be sure to wear a wide-brimmed hat and a physical sunscreen with at least 30 SPF broadspectrum.

Of course, sunscreen is an important part of any basic skincare routine, but it’s even more critical post-microneedling. Remember that your skin will be tender to the touch and highly susceptible to sun exposure following this procedure.

Don’t use any retinol products after microneedling

In addition to staying out of the sun, you’ll also want to avoid any products containing retinol for five to seven days after microneedling. Other active ingredients, such as AHAs, BHAs, and Vitamin C, can also be too harsh in the days following your appointment.

Finally, stay away from products containing alcohol for up to two weeks, as these can further dehydrate your skin.

Sweat-inducing activities should be avoided

Since microneedling exposes your pores, it’s important to avoid sweating for two to three days after treatment. That means intense exercise, saunas, and jacuzzis are off-limits. Breaking a sweat during the early healing stages can clog your pores and introduce bacteria into the open wounds, putting you at higher risk for clogged pores and potential infection.

Consider this your free pass to take a few days off your gym routine.

Don’t swim for a couple of days

Swimming is another activity you should save for a different day. Just like sweating, jumping into a chlorinated swimming pool or a salty ocean could expose your sensitive skin to unwanted bacteria. Wait at least 72 hours before taking a dip.

Invest in recommended aftercare products

Your esthetician will likely recommend certain products to aid in the healing process. We suggest listening to this advice, to ensure optimal results from your treatment and lessen the chances of a reaction. They know what works and what doesn’t, so always use the solutions they share with you!

A gentle cleanser, hyaluronic acid, and antibiotic cream are three big ones.

Additionally, know that applying makeup after microneedling is another no-no. You might be tempted to hide that redness with foundation, but doing so in the first 48 hours can clog your pores, cause breakouts, and introduce bacteria into your skin.

Contact your esthetician if side effects persist

Redness, dryness, and inflammation are all expected side effects of microneedling. In the days following the procedure, you might even have a minor breakout. After all, it temporarily interrupts the way your moisture barrier functions, so you’ll want to layer on that gentle moisturizer.

However, if you notice these problems persist after a week or so, reach out to your esthetician. They’ll be more than happy to assess your situation and determine if your skin’s reaction is abnormal.
